NEW YORK STATE TUITION ASSISTANCE PROGRAM (TAP)

TAP is a financial aid program financed by New York State. It is awarded on the basis of need and availability of State funding (financial need is the difference between the cost of education and the amount an eligible student can afford to pay). TAP assists eligible New York State residents attending in-state post-secondary institutions with training-related expenses.  It is not repayable, and is based on state laws and regulations, and the Institute’s guidelines and requirements.

  Eligibility
  • Be United States citizens or eligible non-citizens.

  • Reside in New York State for at least one year prior to the start date of the program.

  • Be enrolled in a program of 1440 hours minimum.

  • Not in default on any student loan.

  • Has not exceeded thirty-six TAP payment points as an undergraduate student.

  • Provide proof of high school diploma or equivalent.

  • Attend classes regularly, Monday through Thursday-6 hours daily, 24 hours weekly.

  • Acquire an overall G.P.A. of 2.0, minimum.

What Determines The Amount of a TAP Award?
  • The academic year in which first payment of TAP or any State award is received.

  • The type of post-secondary institution and the tuition charged.

  • The combined family New York State net taxable income.

  • The financial status - dependent or independent.

  • Other family members enrolled in college.

  When to Apply

The filing deadline for TAP is May 1 of the academic year for which aid is sought.

  Disbursement Procedures

Names of financial aid eligible students are recorded on the TAP Roster.  An Award Statement is then sent to students from TAP stating the amount of award student will receive.   The Institute will not disburse funds to any student, before student’s name appears on the TAP roster.

  Refund

Refunds to the Tuition Assistance Program will be done within 30 days of the date the student officially withdrew or within 30 days after the Institute determines that the student has with-drawn.

  Statement of Educational Purpose

Students are required to sign a Statement of Educational Purpose in order to certify that they will use any financial aid received for educational purposes only. They should also sign additional statements relating to:

  • Drug abuse

  • Child support

  • Family size

  • Refunds or defaults on a GSL
